Many people finish their term papers or essays and quickly hand them in to the instructor without taking time to proofread the copy of the paper. Poor grades will be the result of a paper that has spelling mistakes, poor grammar, or other types of mistakes. Here is a checklist to use to make sure you are not a victim of these common mistakes with your term paper. 1. Take some time to look at your instructor's previously graded term paper. Observing mistakes others have made with this insuructor will help give an idea of what the instructor considers important. What types of errors do you personally make when writing essays? Look for these errors in your term paper. The time spent studying your previous writing exercises will be worth it. 2. Once the rough draft is written walk away from it and go do something else for a while. Take at least an hour or two away from the rough draft. It is best to take a day or two away from a longer term paper. 3. Read your term paper out loud. If possible ask a friend to read the research paper out loud so you can hear it. It is surprising how many mistakes can be heard through reading the paper out loud such as grammar and punctuation. 4. How is your term paper organized? Would you keep reading this research paper if it belonged to someone else? If not, change it to make it interesting. Take time to look at the thesis statement. Is it a complete sentence? Look at the main points in your term paper and ask yourself if these are described in the thesis statement. If not, take time to rewrite the thesis to incorporate the main ideas in it. Next, look at the attention-grabber or hook that you use in the first paragraph. Is it appropriate? Does it grab the attention of the reader? If it is a statistic, is it valid and reliable? |
